About me
I am a long time gadget, web, and information technology enthusiast. I credit my father with igniting my spark for tech within me. Much of my childhood was spent with him tinkering with cars (the Z-28 was my favorite) and tricking out our home entertainment system. He introduced me to the Commodore Vic-20 and also sparked my interest in and "reverse" engineering.
Although I don’t need to own latest video game console, graphics card, or smartphone, I am very interested in how the tech world continues to evolve around us. I am constantly listening podcasts, reading, and engaging in conversation. I love the IT because when done right it can make life and work easier, as well as keeping us connected. I marvel at how far we have come in such short time.
Why I started this site
When I graduated college I took a job with one of the oldest and most respected blue-chip companies out there. I had hoped my time there would help to hone my IT career. What I found was a world of pigeon-holding and the hopes of my employer funding crucial career furthering training never materialized.
I always knew I could do more and I did. A precious Gameinatrix got me writing and reviewing videogames as well as interviewing a handful of industry heavy hitters. Hell, I even got a guest editorial on a major game review site. From there I got involved an organization that was invested in getting women and girls interested in working with technology.
From there I met a great Scot who indoctrinated me into Content Management Systems (CMS). Learning to work with a CMS made for easier content creation & posting, but challenged to understand in how they worked.
This site is my sandbox. I built my first website back in 2003 just using HTML, frames, and Blogger. I’ve been working with Joomla since 2005. On the front-end, this site serves as a repository for thoughts, funny pics, commentary, videos and the occasional article written by myself. I pretty much use the back-end to learn about PHP, MySQL, DHTML, and anything Open Source that can run on a Unix/Linux server.
Special thanks: Mike - I think it was our days at Wachovia that cemented my interest in IT, whether it was support, database, or web development. Will - thank you for constantly encouraging me to keep pushing. From your example I've witnessed that fulfilling careers can blossom out of passions.
