Career Fairs

Decatur Job FairCareer fairs. What are they anyway? A place to connect potential employers? A place to network? Lately they have become places where men wear ill fitting suits and women display some rather questionable attire. Idle conversation usually consists of what you used to do, how long you've been out of work, and what was crazy about the last company you were with.

This was the second career fair that I attended at Downtown Decatur's Holiday Inn and the fifth I've attended this year. They have been a far cry from the fairs put on by UGA's Career Center (open to alumni). For the most part, many of the career fairs I've attended are well publicized, but poorly organized and many of the companies they claim will be there don't show. Out of a total of 20 companies that should have been present, less than ten bothered to show (one of which recruiter was for one of those gold buy back companies, which in my mind screamed SCAM!). The companies that do show rarely have any brand recognition and are small behind the scenes players. And ENOUGH with these continuing education booths from Devry, Strayer, and Phoenix. If I was looking for information on a graduate degree program, I would not be seeking it at a career/job fair!

The word "fair", to me, connotes fun. These fairs are not fun, and rarely optimistic. They should be called job slogs. They are okay if you want a job, any job. If your looking for a position in a specific area of interest, most of the time the company representatives present cannot tell you much about that role in their organization. Hands down, the best experience I have had with finding hiring employers has been working with those who recruit out of a undergrad program. But what do you do when you're no longer part of academia?
